1.3 Installation procedure

Standard installation - Local installation on a workstation

You can use this link to download our installation application cwsetup.exe from our internet server. Depending on your browser settings, the file will be saved in your Download folder or a dialog will appear in which you can "Save" or "Run" the file. Once the file has been downloaded, open it by double-clicking or wait until the application starts automatically, if you have selected "Run" when quieried.

cwsetup.exe has been downloaded and can be opened, here using the current Firefox browser as an example. (May differ in other browsers).

After opening, Windows User Account Control will ask for your permission to allow the cadwork installation application to make changes to your device. This step may require approval of user with higher administrative rights. If this is the case, a dialog to enter username and password will pop up.

The cwsetup.exe program starts.

Selection of installation language

First, please select the installation language. By default the language of your operating system is recognized. If you change the language here, it impacts not only the language of your cadwork installation, but also the catalog and INIT template files that will be installed. If no catalog is available for a language, a set of English catalogs will be installed by default.

Currently 14 available languages to choose from.

Product Registration

In this dialog, enter your client data, if available. Your client number is used to install the modules associated with your license. Without a client number entered here, all modules will be installed, as no comparison with your license can be carried out.
If a previous version of cadwork is already installed, the data from this installation is already pre-filled and can therefore be taken over.

Entering client data for product registration

Field of use (Only visible in Switzerland)

For clients with an IP address located in Switzerland, in a next step you are required to select either Wood construction or Engineer as field of use. This window will be visible exclusively in Switzerland because the modules attached to the field of use are developed exclusively for this market.

Selection of the field of use - Exclusively for Switzerland

Installation type

Here you select one of the various installation options. These are briefly explained below, but this installation instructions then follows the Standard installation, as this is usually the initial installation.

Available installation types

Below you will find brief descriptions of the available installation types.

Standard

cadwork is installed on the local computer. The most common default settings are made and cadwork can then be started with all licensed modules on this computer.

Offline installation

The Offline installation also installs the program on the local computer. It is intended for the installation of additional computers in the company network. If computers are already present in the network via the Standard installation or only the installation files via the Update-Server installation, the Offline installation uses the installation packages that have already been downloaded. In contrast to the Standard installation, you do not have to download all the installation data from our web servers again. For this installation, it is necessary to make the Update folder path defined in the Target directories section available on the network, as the installation files from this location are then used for the installation.

Viewer

The Viewer installation is for workstations that are not to be operated with a licensed version of cadwork. On computers with the viewer version installed, cadwork files can be opened but not modified.
If you occasionally want to plug in your USB dongle to use this workstation as a fully-fledged cadwork machine, please install the Standard version. You can use the Standard installation without a licence/USB dongle in viewer mode.

Lexocad Standalone

Only the components necessary for the module cadwork contractor / Lexocad are installed.
If additional cadwork modules are required at a later stage, the installation type must be changed to Standard using Repair/New installation under cadwork start > Live Update.
Repair/New installation will be covered later in this manual.

If cadwork modules are required at later stage, the “Repair/New installation” option can be used.

Download without installation

This installation only downloads the installation packages for cadwork. It is intended for administrators who do not want to install cadwork on the local computer, but only want to download the installation files in order to make them available in the network via the Update path for the Standard or Offline installation. In this case, the program is not installed on the local computer.

Target directories

The paths for the installation are preset, but can be changed manually. If a previous version has already been installed (at least version 22), all paths are adopted here as they were already defined in the previous version.

If directories are located on a server, the path must be specified as a UNC address (Uniform Naming Convention). The prescribed notation always begins with a double backslash before a host or server name (either the actual name of the server or the IP address) followed by a share name and directory name separated by backslash, e.g.

  • \\Server_name\share_name\directory_name
  • \\IP_address\share_name\directory_name

For more in-depth information regarding UNC address, please visit following linked page
Universal Naming Convention on Wikipedia

Preset target directories

Installation paths

The Program path should always remain at « c:\program files\cadwork.dir » in order to adhere to the Windows installation structures. This directory should only be changed in exceptional cases, e.g. if there is not enough space on the hard disk « c:\ ».
However, a lack of space on the system hard drive will cause other problems later.

Update path

The Update path contains all installation files for cadwork after they have been downloaded from the web server. If all computers in the network are to access identical local installation files via the offline installation, for example, it is advisable to set this to a share that is accessible in the network. The default setting here is the local public documents folder.

Shortcut

The option Create desktop shortcut creates a shortcut to cadwork Start on your desktop during installation.

Catalog / Userprofile path

Userprofile path

The Userprofile path contains, for example, start files (inits), layout files, F-key assignments and other relevant setting files for all customizable and important setting options.

If you have already installed the previous version, a copy of the existing userprofile folder is created and this is then prepared and supplemented as a userprofile for version 30, so that you have your existing settings, start files etc. from the previously used version directly available when you start version 30.

Catalog path

The Catalog path is the place where you can store and retrieve user-defined catalog files. Since version 26, the catalog files supplied by cadwork are no longer located in that part, but in a fixed location where they cannot be modified. One of the advantages of this is that your catalogs are strictly separated from the catalogs supplied by cadwork and we can therefore update the supplied cadwork catalogs without the risk of overwriting catalog items that you have modified.

Licence agreement

Please read the licence agreement completely and carefully. To continue the installation, you must agree to the terms and conditions. Once you have done this, all user entries required for the installation are complete. After clicking on Next, you will receive an overview of the files to be installed, after which the actual installation will start.

Acceptance of the license agreement is mandatory.

Cleanup

New from version 30, if you already have more than one previous version of cadwork installed, you can do a clean up and uninstall them during the installation. The direct previous version is not listed here. If desired, click on the corresponding version to uninstall. Selecting the User profile option also deletes the user profiles with your settings for these versions.

You can have older versions cleaned up during installation and free up disk space.

Ready to Install

The modules to be installed and additional data such as catalogs and Userprofiles are displayed in a list.

cadwork Prerequisites

cadwork requires a number of programs and prerequisites on your computer in order to function properly. These include extensions and additional programs from Windows or Microsoft. The system checks whether all software requirements are met on your system. If required components are missing (as shown in the image below), an attempt is made to download and install them.

In this case, a required Microsoft package was not found.

Download program data and modules

The program files are then downloaded for installation. The data is stored in the set Update path (see above) and installed from there after downloading.

After downloading the modules, the view changes and the progress of downloading the subsequent userprofiles and catalogs is displayed.

Progress when downloading the cadwork modules.

Installing the downloaded modules and completing the installation

After the download, the installation files downloaded to the Update path are installed in the set Program path target folder. Modules that have been installed are highlighted in green.

During installation, modules that have already been installed are displayed in green.

Once the installation is complete, an overview of the installed modules is displayed again.
