1.4 ModelViewDefinition MVD
Citation Building Smart "Model View Definition (MVD)
"In general, an MVD, or "Model View Definition", is a selection of entities from the entire IFC schema to describe a specific use or workflow. MVDs can be as broad as almost the entire schematic (e.g. for project archiving) or as specific as a few object types and associated data (e.g. for pricing a curtain wall system)."
For example, a wall can be represented :
- as a line segment (or curve) between two points
- as one of many types of 3D geometry for visualization and analysis (e.g. as extruded bodies or triangulated surfaces)
- as simple shapes or with specific construction details (input of individual bolts, pipe connections, wiring, etc.)...
- along with data such as technical specifications, who's in charge, schedule and cost information. But not all domain experts in a project's design, procurement, manufacturing and operational processes need all the same information supplied or received.
To support BIM interoperability across hundreds of software applications, the IFC schema is designed to accommodate many different configurations and levels of detail.
An MVD uses IFC entities to define an exchange standard for a specific use case or workflow. This MVD is implemented by software suppliers.
